12:00, 19 April 2016

Artists, celebrities and visitors gathered at Turner Contemporary on Saturday to celebrate the gallery’s fifth birthday.

The day’s programme included a talk by Margate artist Tracey Emin, workshops, live music, a flashmob, JMW Turner-inspired cocktails and a birthday cake.

Visitors sang Happy Birthday as the cake, made by Great British Bake Off contestant and Broadstairs resident Chetna Makan, was cut by Tracey.

Director of Turner Contemporary, Victoria Pomery, thanked supporters of the gallery.

She said: “I am thrilled to be celebrating five years since the opening of Turner Contemporary. It is a momentous milestone and a chance to celebrate the gallery’s achievements with all those who have supported our efforts since we opened our doors to the public in 2011.”

Throughout the day there was entertainment, which included performances by The Big Sing community choir and a performance of classical composer Helen Caddick’s new work, Bright Planet.

To highlight the art gallery’s five-year vision of ‘art inspiring change’, artist Tracey Emin hosted a private, invite-only talk on creativity and transformation for a select group of young people who have shown outstanding creative promise.

The evening kicked off with visitors taking part in a flash mob inspired by Turner Contemporary’s exhibition Joachim Koester: The Other Side of the Sky.
