Crazy creatures and weird and wacky shapes will fill the sky over Margate when the town’s international kite festival flies in.

The fifth annual event is on the main sands on Saturday, September 24, and Sunday, September 25, and will attract thousands of visitors and the world’s elite kite makers and fliers.

King of the Kites may well be Rolf Zimmermann and his imposing dragon, lobsters, starfish and owls.

He will share the air with Team Spectrum, True Colours from Belgium with their soft kites, mask kites, fish and frogs, The Decorators with an eight-person display of synchronized ballet, Andrew and Kathleen Beattie’s including the Blue Peter teddy bear, giant dogs, tigers and dragons.

Also flying high will be Rolf Sturm from Germany who is well known for his two line bi-plane kites, parachuting teddy bears and sweet drops, and Gerd Claus from Germany with his historic reproduction kites.

The Beccles Bunch from Suffolk will also be on the beach, alongside master kite builder Robert Van Weers from New Zealand who specialises in large soft kites with a humorous touch such as a monkey with a banana, and trains of tropical fish.

Jan and Jolanda Leuwen from Holland will bring their school bus kite and Japanese themed kites of Sumo wrestlers and geishas; and Irene Teo and John Tan from Singapore promise Gummy Bears, crocodiles and manta rays; patchwork quilt kites from Shula and Eli Shavit from Israel.

A jester, native American and a train of flowers complete with pots come from Belgian duo Jos and Kaatje Valke, while Spanish team Imagina plan to impress by interacting with their kites to tell a story to music.

To add to the fun and excitement there is lots for all of the family to do across the weekend including a kite workshop and exhibition at Droit House, a kite treasure hunt around the town, with family tickets to the Carlton Cinema to be won and much more.

The free festival runs from 10am to 5pm on both days.
