00:00, 28 September 2001
THANET is to pay its tribute to the victims of the New York and other US disasters with a memorial concert. America: A Salute, takes place at the Winter Gardens, Margate, on Tuesday October 16. Proceeds will go to the Red Cross.
Local musicians have offered their services free to create an evening of light music, jazz and classical pieces. The event is supported by Thanet Leisure Force, which has donated the venue free as its contribution. It will start at 7.30pm.
Deputy council leader Iris Johnston said: "We are only too happy to liaise
with individuals who share our wish to show our deep concern for all those affected by these terrible disasters. Our chairman, Cllr Bill Palmer, will lead the council support, and, knowing the people of Thanet, we will all demonstrate our solidarity by supporting
this event."
A spokeswoman for the concert organisers said: “This is a community event which gives the people of Thanet a chance to get together and pay tribute to the dead and bereaved in the recent American disasters.
“People have been shocked and outraged, especially by the unbelievable catastrophe in New York, and we hope that this event will give them the chance to express their support.”
Tickets cost £5 and are available from the Winter Gardens on 01843 296111/292795 and from M&G Music, 16 The Vale, Broadstairs, on 01843 867426.
