A ‘dangerous defect’ has reportedly shut a major route.

The A28 in Birchington - a road plagued by recent closures - has been blocked off today for emergency repairs.

It follows works by Southern Water and “frustration” from residents over constant diversions.

Birchington Parish Council made villagers aware on social media.

Parish Clerk Jane Bevan said: “We have just received an email update from Kent County Council (KCC) regarding the closure of Canterbury Road which has come as a surprise to all of us this morning.

“Following the recent works by Southern Water there is a dangerous defect in the road surface that needs to be rectified immediately especially before we have any rain.

“I am informed that the closure will last for one day.

“The anti-skid surface will be replaced in a month’s time - which will mean another closure - but again I am informed that this will take place overnight.

“We have relayed how tired and frustrated we are as a community of these continued closures on a main arterial road.”

Earlier this year, residents were faced with six months of gas works in the area to upgrade the network.

In May, smoke emerged from a manhole, causing an emergency response and shutting nearby Park Lane for several days.

KCC has been contacted for more information.
