Demolition teams are moving in as fire crews battle an industrial estate blaze for the ninth day.

More than 30 firefighters have been on the scene at Westwood Industrial Estate near Margate each day since a blaze broke out last Saturday.

Now, demolition crews will begin work to open up the gutted unit in a bid to help firefighters access the former Cummins Power Generation building more safely.

The work is expected to lead to an increase in smoke, and more flames will be visible throughout the day.

Residents living nearby are advised to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.

At its height, 80 firefighters were battling the blaze last Saturday morning, with billowing smoke being seen in as far away as Sandwich.

The empty industrial unit is said to have contained 6,000 bales of 'illegally stored waste'.

An enforcement notice was sent to the operator back in January to remove the waste and the Environment Agency are currently investigating.

Thanet council last sent enforcement officers to assess the site in May.

The company registered to pay business rates at the warehouse is listed by Thanet council as D.W. Land Ltd who are based in Stoke Gabriel, Devon.

According to their records they are registered to Unit P and Cl Unit P of the Westwood Industrial Estate.

Director David Weeks is also linked with two other companies, Dorsley Estates and Hope Cove Estates (currently dormant.)
