Eyewitness Carly Anstice was travelling on a bus from Westwood Cross when she spotted the smouldering motor.

"The bus driver told me the buses were to be re-routed down Whitehall Road instead of stopping at the viaduct," she said.

"I got off and walked down to be nosey.

"The engine was still smoking as I walked towards it."

One fire engine was sent to the scene to fight the flames.

Crews remained at the scene for 20 minutes until the blaze was extinguished.

However, officials say the cause of the incident has not yet been confirmed.

"We were sent to the scene of a car fire in Margate Road this morning," a spokesman said.

"Crews, who used hose-reel jets, stopped the blaze at 9.10am.

"The exact cause of the fire has not been confirmed."

No injuries were reported.
