Bingo players are bidding an emotional farewell to their beloved club when it calls its last numbers tonight.

The Beacon Bingo club in Margate is closing after 35 years in the town and hundreds of people are expected to say their goodbyes.

Members were shocked when the announcement came last month to close the venue with bosses citing "significant trading losses" were due to the closure.

Cathy Hussey, who has played at the club for the past seven years, says it is a sad day.

"It's been emotional and all the older ladies are down there this afternoon. There's a lot of very upset people. I'll be very emotional down there tonight.

"It's so sad because it's been heaving this week.

"Every night this week people have been in there you've not seen for years but it's all a bit too late."

Mrs Hussey says there is no big ceremony planned and it will just be a simple game of bingo like any other night.

A message from Graeme Corner on the hall's Facebook page today said: "Dear Beaconites, sadly the day has come. Our final day of Bingo after 35 years. We do hope to see you."

Some 25 jobs were put at risk when bosses announced the closure but promised to consult with staff about relocating people to other businesses in Thanet - including the Showboat amusement arcade next door.

Beacon’s parent company, Praesepe Group, say financial losses in previous years proved too much, while thanking staff for their service.

Mark Schertle, chief operating officer, said: “The outstanding contribution of all Praesepe staff and management at this club for over seven years has enabled us to provide a great service to the local community.

“Unfortunately, despite these efforts, the bingo club has made a significant trading loss for the past few years.”
