A film shot on the Kent coast and starring a Golden Globe-winning actress has hit cinemas today.

True Things was filmed in Thanet and features Ruth Wilson, who is best known for her parts in The Affair, Luther and His Dark Materials.

Most of the filming took place in the county, according to the Kent Film Office.

It says Kate’s flat scenes were filmed at a private home in Margate, while various others were shot in Ramsgate, including at the Red Lion pub.

Kingsgate Bay is used for a dream sequence, and Harpers Bar in Broadstairs features throughout the film.

Wilson stars as Kate, a young woman living on the fringes of society as she becomes intoxicated with a stranger who overturns her quiet lifestyle.

It is based on the novel True Things About Me, by Deborah Kay Davies.

As well as the Saving Mr Banks star, the film also features Tom Burke (Only God Forgives, The Souvenir) as Blond, the man she falls in love with.

True Things is directed by Harry Wootliff, whose debut feature film was the critically-acclaimed romantic drama Only You.

Shooting took place in February, March, September and October 2020.

It was one of 20 productions which cancelled filming in the county between the middle of March and the end of June of the same year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, Thanet continues to play centre stage to Hollywood film crews shooting the new Sam Mendes blockbuster, Empire of Light.

Oscar winners Olivia Colman and Colin Firth both star in the movie, which is being filmed at various locations across Margate.
