Part of a high street was cordoned off following a reported electrical fire under the pavement.

Fire crews taped off a section of Ramsgate town centre after 'thick black smoke' was seen coming from the ground.

UK Power Networks say a fault occurred on a piece of electrical equipment and engineers were on scene for hours resolving the issue.

Power was expected to be restored between 6pm.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to the High Street, Ramsgate to reports of thick black smoke issuing from the ground.

"Crews remained in attendance until the arrival of UK Power who isolated the power."
