A fireball meteor was filmed soaring across the sky near the coast.

Reports of the astrological wonder - seen on Friday between 8pm and 9.30pm - were sent to the International Meteor Organization, with the object also spotted in France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany.

The sightings suggest a flight path From Belgium towards The Netherlands.

While NASA suggests fireballs are common, with 40 one metre or larger objects hitting the Earth's atmosphere every year, they aren't observed often as they appear in unpopulated areas.

The phenomenon is caused by large meteors burning up in the atmosphere as they enter the atmosphere at up to 160,000 mph.

The large celestial body spotted this weekend was filmed in flight by Ramsgate resident Jeremy Derrick Housman.
