Firefighters are set to tackle Mount Everest in a charity challenge next week.

The latest recruits from Kent Fire and Rescue Service will be scaling the equivalent of the world's highest peak carrying 30kg of kit on their backs.

The 24 trainee firefighters will climb the 29,029ft (8,848m) on ladders at Westwood Cross next Thursday.

The team are supporting two good causes - Demelza House and The Fire Fighters Charity - as each member attempts to climb 1,210ft each.

Shoppers and members of the public visiting the Broadstairs centre will be able to donate on the day towards the two charities during the climb, which kicks off at 10.30am.

The crews are aiming to reach the top by the end of the afternoon and have raised more than £1,800 towards their £2,400 target so far.

Trainee firefighter Jon Gater said: “We’re expecting this challenge to be tough and the extra kit we’ll be carrying will make it even harder.

"But we’re excited and looking forward to raising as much money as we can for the two fantastic charities.

"We’re also grateful for the support we’ve received from local business."
