Margate’s past glories – when a human tide of holidaymakers and day-trippers flooded to the resort every summer – will be featured in a film to be screened in Westgate on Sunday, January 23.

A special edition of Thanet On Film – which broke box office records when it was screened in Broadstairs last year – is now going to focus on Margate in a screening at the Carlton Cinema.

The film will show why Margate was once the most popular holiday resort in Britain – and explore how it might be revived again, according to the film’s producer, Christine Tongue.

"The way Margate is today, it’s hard to believe how hugely popular it once was," Christine said. "This film offers vivid evidence of the thousands of people who flocked to the resort in its heyday, and the fun and excitement which gripped the place." But the film looks into the future, too, and investigates Margate’s hopes for regeneration – the most controversial topic covered in the film.

Featuring fascinating footage from the 1920s to the present day, the film offers viewers an insight into how Thanet has changed over the years. "It’s like watching your history happening in front of your eyes," Christine said.

The film also charts the decline of the area in the 1980s and the 1990s, with remarkable shots of the National Front marching on Margate seafront and violence breaking out.

And the film comes up to date with an investigation into the regeneration plans for the town.

"With the Turner gallery opening this year and the Dreamland heritage park also on the way, some people believe Margate is about to make an amazing comeback," Christine said. "But will it happen? We’ve interviewed people who are incredibly passionate on both sides of the argument."

The film also includes interviews with Thanet council leader Bob Bayford, South Thanet MP Laura Sandys, plus items on the China Gateway and Manston airport. The screening will be followed by a discussion with the film-makers and a chance for the audience to put their views.
