Children had their say in choosing an exciting new play area for Margate at an East Kent Housing (EKH) play area consultation event.

Tenants near Laleham Road, on the Millmead Estate in Margate, were invited to Millmead Hall to choose which equipment should go in their play area.

They chose a metal and fabric play area, including climbing frame with sliding bars and wobble sections, a nest swing and hanging swing. The new play equipment should be installed in time for the summer holidays as part of a £30,000 investment by EKH working with Thanet District Council on the play area.

The project is part of an ongoing Make It Better Environmental Improvement Programme (EIP) to improve and invest in facilities on local council estates.

Destiny Ahmed, six, who helped choose the new play equipment, said: “I can’t wait for the play area to be finished. I like to go there when the sun shines.”

EKH surveyor Sue Hogben said: “We were really pleased to see so many people brave the weather to come along and see what we are planning and help us choose the play

“The play equipment chosen will really complement the local area and I hope will be enjoyed by many young people in years to come.”

EIP’s are about benefiting council house residents by improving an area’s safety, cleanliness, tidiness and use, while contributing to residents’ health and wellbeing.

Applications for an EIP can be made by tenants and leaseholders, local authorities, councillors, EKH staff, residents’ groups and police/community safety units.

Examples of projects include enhancing gardens, protecting land with bollards, safety and security improvements, boundary fencing, bin store and drying area improvements.
