A man has been charged with the murder of a six-week-old baby.

Lee Vernon, 20, of no fixed address, is accused of murdering the boy, who died in hospital on July 26 this year.

Police had been alerted three days before that the baby had been admitted to hospital with injuries and was in a critical condition.

Vernon was charged following an investigation by detectives from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate.

He appeared before Medway magistrates via video-link this morning and was remanded in custody.

He will next appear at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday.
