Plans have been revealed by McDonald’s to open a new drive-thru.

The fast food giant wants to open a new site in Ramsgate, next to a Tesco supermarket.

It would see the drive-thru pitched up next to existing the store in Manston Road on a piece of unused land, which bosses say is an “ideal location for a new restaurant to serve and support residents, while not taking away from Thanet’s housing targets”.

Plans would also see a 49-space car park including four disabled parking spaces, four Electric Vehicle (EV) charging spaces, and four motorcycle parking spaces.

There would also be eight short-stay cycle parking spaces with two dual-access lockers and pedestrian links to the existing Tesco superstore.

The creation of the car park would see minor alterations to the Tesco car park as a new access road would be made.

Bosses say: “This would bring the combined number of spaces to approximately 350, to serve both Tesco and the proposed McDonald’s restaurant.

“Parking surveys have been conducted indicating that there would be more than sufficient space to accommodate the demand for both uses.”

Given the fast food site’s close proximity to Tesco, bosses say they would take their responsibility to their neighbours seriously and ensure they are not adversely affected by the operation of the proposed drive-thru.

To do this, they pledge to limit cooking odours by installing a ventilation system, have a minimum of three daily litter picks to collect all rubbish in the vicinity of the restaurant and carry out a noise assessment as part of the planning application.

To get to the drive-thru and restaurant, motorists would come via the existing Tesco access roundabout on Manston Road.

The access road will be extended through the car park to serve the restaurant.

“The drive-thru lane has been carefully designed and can accommodate up to 29 cars to ensure that no queuing would occur within the Tesco car park,” bosses say in their propositions, which have not yet been submitted as a planning application.

“Deliveries will typically occur three to five times per week at pre-arranged times, where vehicles will unload from the restaurant car park.

“A transport assessment will be submitted as part of the planning application which will consider the anticipated impacts of the proposed development on the local road network. Our transport consultants are working closely with Kent County Council highway authority to agree on the scope of this report.”

The leading fast food outlet has launched a public consultation in a bid to hear back about its plans.

If given the green light, it will be the town’s second McDonald’s drive-thru with the other located at Minster services about four miles away, another at Westwood Cross – less than two miles away – and one in Ramsgate town centre.
