A maternity team says there has been a rise in verbal abuse towards staff trying to provide care to patients.

East Kent Hospitals has faced a recent hike in "unacceptable behaviour" and has warned it takes a "zero tolerance approach" to abuse and aggression.

The maternity team shared a post on Facebook, which said: "We want to create a safe environment for all our staff and patients. You can help us do this.

"Sadly, there has recently been a rise in the level of unacceptable behaviour whilst our maternity team try to provide care to patients.

"Our teams are dedicated to serving our communities by providing care, and East Kent Hospitals takes a zero tolerance approach to abuse and aggression towards our staff.

"Thank you to the majority of our patients who, as always, are supportive and understanding. Remember, if you need any advice or help, get in touch."

The hospital trust runs William Harvey in Ashford, Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in Margate, Kent and Canterbury in the city, Buckland in Dover and Royal Victoria in Folkestone.

A spokesman for East Kent Hospitals said: "Our maternity staff are working extremely hard to care for families.

"Unfortunately, some staff have experienced verbal abuse recently and we are reminding people that no one should face abuse for doing their job."
