Netflix star Ashley Walters has finally secured permission to extend his Kent home at the third time of asking.

The actor, who played drug kingpin Dushane in the hit show Top Boy, has been given the green light to transform the chalet bungalow in Herne Bay following a planning saga lasting more than two years.

He first put in plans to extend the property in 2022 - looking for a two-storey front extension and single-storey rear extension with a balcony.

However, the former So Solid Crew rapper came up against Canterbury City Council’s (CCC) planning officers when they rejected two separate applications.

He appealed both refusals to the government’s Planning inspectorate, but the decisions were upheld.

In the most recent refusal, the Inspector wrote: “Once extended, the building would have a strident, discordant and overpowering appearance.

“As a result, it would dominate and significantly harm this part of the street scene.”

However, fresh plans by Whitstable-based Invent Architecture have proved more palatable, finally winning approval from the local authority.

A CCC officer wrote of the revised designs: “There would be no unacceptable overbearing impact as the proposal is largely retained in line with the existing front and rear building lines with the roof pitching away from neighbouring occupiers.”

Under the new application, the chalet bungalow will still be extended, but the scale of it has been reduced - with the first-floor extension resulting in a height increase of only half a metre.

One neighbour wrote to CCC’s planning department to object to the bid, saying it would be out of character with the area and would overshadow neighbours.

Herne Parish Council did not object or support it.

Planning officers have recommended that conditions be imposed to make sure the new balcony has privacy screens, as it “has the potential to overlook the rear gardens” of neighbours.

Mr Walters, 41, previously told KentOnline he would consider moving away if he could not secure permission for the extension.

“It is highly likely if we cannot get it the way we want to, we will have to move out of this part of Kent,” he said.

“We would just have to find somewhere else locally that suits our needs.”

Mr Walters stressed he was a “big fan” of the area, and his children were settled in school, so he did not intend to move his family back to London.

According to Rightmove, the dad-of-eight, originally from Peckham, purchased the home for £815,000 in 2021.

His planning battle with CCC came to light after he briefly mentioned it when being interviewed at his home by Louis Theroux last year.

Just six days after CCC planning officers approved Mr Walters’ bid, they also gave the green light to a two-storey extension to a home in the same street.
