Broadstairs: Chandos Square phone box to be turned into a defibrillator location
12:23, 14 March 2018
A council has adopted a phone box in a bid to turn it into a defibrillator location.
Broadstairs and St Peter's town council took over Chandos Square's red phone box on Saturday and will use it to house a community public access defibrillator, used to assist people who suffer a cardiac arrest.
The council hope to install the life-saving equipment in the coming weeks, with the signs at the top of the phone box initially replaced to say defibrillator.
A spokesman for the town council said: "We liaising with Dr Mike Dadd, South East Coast Ambulance Service, British Heart Foundation Healthcare Practitioner and the Community Heartbeat Trust on the purchase and installation of the defibrillator.
"We are hoping the equipment will be installed in the next few weeks."
The defibrillator will be in a locked cabinet, with an access code given to members of the public when they dial 999 in the event on an emergency.
The spokesman added: "Initially, the signs at the top of the phone box will be replaced to say defibrillator and then we are planning to have it freshly painted in its iconic red colour.
"As with the defibrillator that has been located in the red phone box on the Jetty since January 2015, the town council are looking forward to continuing to work with Tesco’s High Street, Broadstairs who voluntarily undertake weekly checks of the equipment."
