The fate of Manston airport triggered an eve-of-election row today after David Cameron said he supported its re-opening in an interview this afternoon.
The Prime Minister told BBC South East that the Conservative plan would give Manston every chance.
He said: “In terms of aviation we have the big review of Heathrow and Gatwick and other options to come out in the summer, but I am very keen that we save Manston Airport and we have an action plan to do just that.
“I think it’s right to give Manston every chance of staying open and that is what our five-point action plan is all about.
“I am confident that it will give time to make sure that vital services continue.”
But Ukip leader Nigel Farage hit back and accused Mr Cameron of changing his tune.
He said: "Mr Cameron stated in the Commons that Manston was the sole responsiblity of its owner [Ann Gloag]. Yet, just two days before polls are due to open in South Thanet, he thinks he can take to the TV to make another empty promise."
He added: "He's had a year as Prime Minister to solve this problem, and he's only raising it a few hours before an election? What an utterly desperate move. Everyone knows the truth. If you love Manston, and want it back, there's only one party to vote for: UKIP."
The first stage of the plan is under way with consultancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers independently reviewing the process so far on decisions about the future of the airport. The report is due soon.
