Police issue festive period warning to publicans

PUBLIC HOUSES that break licensing laws in Thanet during Christmas and the New Year could be shut down, says a police chief. The warning from Chief Insp Mark Janaway came as the division's Operation Walrus campaign was announced.
He said: “We will support licensees who run orderly pubs and clubs during this period of increased activity but will do our best to close down those who flout the law.” Police are targeting potential trouble hot spots and have identified times when crime like criminal damage, assaults, drink-related offences and public disturbances are likely to happen.
Pubs, clubs, fast food outlets and taxi offices are among the most popular areas where people congregate and could be a flash point for trouble. Patrols will closely monitor these areas and stop checks will be carried out where necessary.
Special constables will oversee Thanet’s housing estates and town centre constables will be in evidence during late night shopping, working in conjunction with CCTV and the Shop Safe radio scheme. The mobile CCTV van, Thanet Eyes, will also be deployed across the island.
Insp Paul Sadd said: “This is a co-ordinated approach that we believe covers every eventuality. We are using intelligence-led policing to ensure that residents and visitors can enjoy a trouble-free and peaceful Christmas and New Year. We will also embrace the national campaign to prevent drinking alcohol and driving.”
