The route was sealed off by police at the junction with Queen Street.

A spokesman for the force confirmed officers were called to the scene to a collision involving a car and two pedestrians.

"Officers were at the scene with the South East Coast Ambulance Service," he said.

"The two pedestrians were taken to local hospitals for treatment."

It is understood a man and a woman were involved in the incident, but it has not been confirmed how serious their injuries are.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: "The two pedestrians have been assessed and treated at the scene and are being taken to hospital for further checks."

The route reopened shortly before 5pm today.

Leopold Street was the scene of a fatal crash that saw Yoram Hirshfeld, 81, and his pregnant daughter, 37-year-old Noga Sella, mowed down when a car mounted a pavement in August.

Mrs Sella's husband Omer, 40, also suffered internal organ damage in the incident and their five-year-old daughter sustained a life-threatening head injury.

The couple's eight-year-old son suffered shock and minor injuries.

The tragedy unfolded outside a multi-storey car park, when the five victims - who were visiting from Cambridge - were walking to their hotel following a meal.

Nitesh Bissendary was jailed for causing the deaths by dangerous driving earlier this month.

The 31-year-old, of Highlands Glade in Manston, was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
