Ramsgate policeman Michael Tovell appears at Margate Magistrates Court charged with misconduct

A policeman appeared in court today charged with misconduct in a public office.
Michael Tovell of Margate Road, Ramsgate claims he was knocked unconscious in a graveyard after being set upon by a group of people.
The 45-year-old is also accused of arming a taser and misusing his police radio while on duty.
He appeared at Margate Magistrates Court today with a group of supporters who sat in the gallery and spoke only to reveal his name and address.
District judge Justin Barron referred the case to be heard at crown court due to the severity of the charges.
Tovell did not enter a plea but his defence solicitor revealed he has requested the hearing to be moved from Canterbury Crown Court where he is has been asked to appear on September, 27.
He remains suspended from duty.
