A pre-school is celebrating achieving a good Ofsted rating following its first visit from inspectors.

The education watchdog visited the Cheeky Monkeys in Westgate-on-Sea earlier this month.

The report, published today, praises the nursery for its teaching, leadership and engagement with parents.

Donna Davis, co-owner and manager, says the report is "extremely pleasing" considering the pre-school in Station Road only opened in 2016 and it is their first Ofsted inspection.

"We have a strong partnership with parents and strong with encouraging childrens' independence. We're pleased with all of it to be fair," Mrs Davis said.

"We'll try to work for outstanding next time and just continue to improve."

In her report, inspector Kimberley Luckham highlights mathematics teaching as a strength of the school while also praising the progress children make in their learning.

The report says: "Children play and explore cooperatively together. They use their imagination well, confidently share views and negotiate their play ideas.

"The manager and staff team accurately evaluate the quality of the provision. They include the views of parents and children to help identify areas for further improvement."

But she raised concerns about staff including all children in group activities to support learning and "not consistently monitoring" children washing their hands to embed it into their routine.

Mrs Davis says the recommendations are "easy to rectify" adding she is proud of the team and the report overall.

"We're quite a small but that's what parents like, we're quite a homely setting," she said. "I'm proud of my team for all the hard work they've put in and we're a very good team.

"We're really pleased with the parents because they've given us positive feedback.

"The inspector said she was amazed with the positive feedback we're having from parents."

The pre-school has 40 children on its roll and caters for youngsters between one and four-years-old.
