Ramsgate RNLI Ron Cannon's funeral sees more than 500 attend

12:33, 05 February 2018

More than 500 attended the funeral service of retired Ramsgate coxswain Ron Cannon MBE last Friday.

Crowds gathered at Ramsgate's St George's Church and among those there were a large number of past and present lifeboat crews.

Many of those had served with Mr Cannon during his 37 years with the RNLI and formed a guard of honour as the coffin entered and left the church.

The congregation was also formed of many friends and colleagues from around the country connected with the life-saving charity who wished to show their respect for Ron, who during his time as coxswain had twice been awarded the RNLI's Silver Medal for gallantry.

Ramsgate RNLI's John Ray said: "In all, such a large congregation was a wonderful testimony to how much Ron was admired and respected.

"He will always be part of Ramsgate Harbour's history and will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege to know him.

"He was a dear friend, colleague and father figure to many."

The RNLI veteran died on Sunday, January 7 after a short illness.
