A safe containing rare coins and heirloom jewellery has been swiped from a house.

Officers are appealing to find the items, which were taken during a burglary between 1.45pm and 2.15pm on Wednesday, July 18 in St Peter's Court, Broadstairs.

Passports, personal documents, a selection of men's and women's watches, jewellery including vintage handmade gold items and a collection of gold and silver coins were inside the safe stolen.

Investigating officer detective constable Chris Bungard said: "The collection of coins are rare – they are in mint condition in their presentation cases and are of limited mintage.

"Among them are a 5oz Gold Robben Island Mint mark coin, a diamond wedding anniversary coin from the Royal Mint, and several Nelson Mandela medallions including a Protea Proof Set of five coins; a Prestige Peace Set containing one gold Mandela /DeKlerk Protea coin and one Mahatma Gandhi gold coin; and a twin set which was issued to mark his ninetieth birthday containing one gold and one silver Nobel Peace Laureate coins.

"These coins are really unusual and are the result of many years of dedicated collecting.

"They would be very difficult to replace, as would the custom-made heirloom jewellery.

"We ask people to remain alert and call us if they believe they have been offered the opportunity to buy some really unusual coins or jewellery."
