10 fire engines sent to field fire in Manston, near Ramsgate

Ten fire engines were called to tackle a huge field fire which caused a road to be closed.

There were long queues on Spitfire Way, Manston, near Ramsgate, after the blaze took hold near Manston Riding Centre off Spitfire Way.

The fire forced the B2050 Manston Road to be closed in both directions.

The road has now reopened and two fire engines remain at the scene as crews damp down hotspots.

At the height of the blaze, an eyewitness told KentOnline: “All surrounding roads are filled with smoke so it's best to avoid Manston entirely if you can help it.

“The fire is big, it is spreading and all surrounding roads on those fields are filled with smoke.

“Cars are about to stop, no one can move anywhere. Manston is becoming gridlocked.”

This is the fourth field fire in Kent in the past couple of weeks.

Blazes in Hersden, Crockenhill and New Romney have all taken place on farmland recently.

A Kent Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “Crews were at the scene of a field on fire off Spitfire Way, Manston.

“At the height of the incident, there were 10 fire engines in attendance.

“Two fire engines remain as crews damp down hotspots.”
