Thanet's RSPCA branch is launching a new subsidised neutering scheme in a bid to crackdown on the district's feral cat issue.

It will be offering free neutering and chipping for male cats and £15 for female cats, for Thanet residents who receive Universal Credit or PIP.

RSPCA Isle of Thanet branch manager Clive Martin says despite the Thanet branch being one of the smallest, the demand is one of the greatest.

He said: "There is definitely a correlation between area deprivation and people not getting their cats neutered.

"People just don't have the money to do it, and forget the importance of it.

"Thanet is the most deprived area in Kent and one of the most deprived areas in the country.

"Owners often forget that cats can start to reproduce at just four months old - that's just 16 weeks which is very young.

"And it's not just important for female cats, but males cats too - and that's why we're offering male cats free for a period.

"It has always been an issue but definitely in Thanet in the last couple of years we have been a lot more kittens because of this.

"Kitten season seems to be all year long now rather than just between spring and autumn."

On average, the branch neuters about 300 Thanet cats a year on the clinic.

The offer is limited, so places at the clinic must be booked.

Clive added: "The scheme is aimed at people on Universal Credit or PIP.

"We will be running this for at least six months.

"We will be having clinics in our mobile vet clinic, at the animal centre, at least twice a month - more if it is successful."
