A takeaway worker who threw metal chairs at a dad-of-two causing him fatal head injuries has been jailed.

Staff at the Seabells fish and chip shop in Station Road, Birchington got into an argument with Rodney Macleod before the assault.

Rashko Kurtev hurled the chairs at the 46-year-old, the second of which struck him in the side of his head.

This caused serious injuries and ultimately led to Mr Macleod’s death in hospital a month after the incident.

Kurtev, of Park Avenue, Birchington, admitted manslaughter at Canterbury Crown Court on November 4.

The 32-year-old was jailed for three years and nine months on Friday at the same court.

Witnesses to the incident on March 9 said Mr Macleod and staff from the restaurant had got into an argument on the afternoon of the assault.

Kurtev, who worked at the business, came outside during the row and threw some of the victim's belongings at him before lobbing the furniture at him.

After being struck by the objects, Mr Macleod fell to the ground and emergency services were called.

He was taken to a local hospital before being flown to a London hospital with serious injuries.

Kurtev was arrested at the shop and was later charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Officers further charged him with murder after Mr Macleod died in hospital on April 15 having never recovered from his injuries.

A post-mortem examination listed his traumatic brain injury among the causes of his death.

The court accepted Kurtev’s guilty plea to manslaughter.

Senior investigating officer Det Insp Colin McKeen said: “This case shows the catastrophic consequences of people turning to violence during disagreements.

“One man has lost his life and another is in jail following an argument which this offender could just have walked away from.

“The use of a metal chair as a weapon was completely unnecessary.

“I would like to offer my condolences to the victim's family and friends.

“I hope the swift investigation and court proceedings help give them some sense of closure as they try to cope with their loss.”
