A Fairtrade fashion show and dishes from around the globe are among the treats in store at this year’s World Food Day celebrations at Margate Winter Gardens.

The event, on Sunday October 16, is now in its sixth year and aims to raise awareness of the problems millions of people across the world face trying to get enough to eat.

Tammy Stewart-Jones, left, organiser and founder of Thanet Fairtrade Initiative, said that the theme of this year’s event is Fairtrade fashion.

She said: “We have teamed up with Kent’s only eco-cotton clothing store to show people the range of clothes available, made from Fairtrade cotton.

“We want people to think not only about where the food they eat has come from, but also the clothes they wear.

“The event is always extremely popular, and helps us to get the message of Fairtrade to a large audience.”

Other highlights will include cookery demonstrations by Ian Dunkerley of Dunkerley’s Hotel and Restaurant in Deal, story-telling, drumming workshops and children’s activities, as well as a market place with more than 100 stalls.

At 11am visitors and exhibitors will be urged to join people across the globe and Stand Up Against Poverty in a united gesture.

Major national companies, including the Co-op and Tesco, are backing the event and Diana Heatly, from youth aid charity the Libra Foundation, will give a presentation on their work.

Entrance to the event and all the activities are free.

There are still some stalls available for traders, operated on an honesty policy basis.

While there is no charge for the stall, traders are asked to donate 10 per cent of their takings. The event runs from 11am - 4pm.
