A three-month-old baby died of a head injury after being found unresponsive and with bruising to his face, an inquest heard.

A police investigation is continuing into the death of Hunter Hodges, and a young man and woman arrested in the aftermath remain on bail.

Now, an inquest has heard ambulance crews were called after the baby was found unresponsive at about 5.15am on Friday, July 15.

The hearing was told the little boy was discovered at an address in Queen's Street, Ramsgate, with a swollen head and bruising to his face.

He was taken to the QEQM Hospital in Margate, where police joined paramedics and arrested a man in his 20s and a woman in her late teens.

Hunter was later taken to a hospital in London, but sadly died on the same day.

A post-mortem examination revealed he had suffered a hypoxic ischemic brain injury – which is an injury that restricted both blood flow and oxygen to his brain.

Potential causes of such an injury can include head traumas, respiratory failure or cardiac arrest.

Hunter's cause of death was given as a head injury, and the inquest was immediately suspended pending the ongoing criminal investigation.

The man and woman under suspicion have since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
