Historic England has chosen Ramsgate as one of the country's first ten Heritage Action Zones.

It has been given the status as part of a scheme run in partnership with Thanet District Council (TDC), Ramsgate Coastal Community Team, Ramsgate Town Council and The Ramsgate Society.

A total of £400,000 is estimated to be ploughed into the project over the next five years which will be matched with £10,000 from Ramsgate Town Council and staff and resources from TDC.

A dedicated projects officer will be appointed to promote activities and opportunities for people to get involved, raise awareness of the scheme and help people understand the heritage in Ramsgate.

Historic England has announced it will also help TDC in carrying out urgent work to keep vacant or partially occupied listed buildings in the town.

Planning director for Historic England in the south east Andy Brown said: "Ramsgate is one of the great English coastal towns with a fascinating maritime history.

"Ramsgate combines outstanding heritage and architecture with a beautiful marine landscape and engaging history" - Deputy leader at Thanet District Council Cllr Lin Fairbrass

"As well as Britain's only Royal Harbour, the town is blessed with a wonderful variety of historic sites."

The scheme is designed to protect and improve historic places for the future.

Deputy leader and cabinet member for community services at TDC Cllr Lin Fairbrass said: "Ramsgate combines outstanding heritage and architecture with a beautiful marine landscape and engaging history.

"Being chosen as one of the country's first ten Heritage Action Zone will not only raise awareness of our town as a heritage destination to attract visitors and investors but will also reinforce our sense of identity and pride."

Other areas given the same status include Appleby in Cumbria, Hull in east Yorkshire and King's Lynn in North Norfolk.
