Tremors have been felt by people across Thanet and surrounding areas this afternoon.

Rumbles and loud noises have been experienced by residents in towns across the the north of the county including in Margate, Broadstairs, Herne Bay, Sheerness and Whitstable.

It is understood the vibrations have been caused by activity at the MoD Shoeburyness, a weapons testing site in south east Essex.

However on social media many speculated it felt like an earthquake.

The Ministry of Defence said it had not been made aware of any significant activity due at the site.

A warning on the MoD Shoeburyness website says that explosions may be noticed until Friday.

An MoD spokesman described it as "routine activity".

The Met Office have been contacted for more information.
