Thanet Roadrunner John Hunt saw ultra success, running more than 65 miles in just over 11-and-a-half hours and winning the Meangate ultramarathon.

Fellow runner Bradley Cameron also saw success, coming fourth, running a double marathon in just over nine hours while setting a record for the fastest lap.

The Meangate event is the first time a 12-hour night race has taken place, with around 100 competitors on the start line. It was held in Hoo and started at 6pm on Saturday, running into 6am on Sunday.

Runners had to complete as many 2.5 mile loops around the outskirts of a golf course within the time limit.

Mr Hunt said: “Training was a bit sporadic for me, due to a few niggling injuries over the last couple of months, plus a few other things that were keeping me from training.”

With a giant screen displaying each competitor’s position, laps completed and miles covered,Mr Hunt realised at mile 37 he had a chance of winning and decided to push harder and increase the pace.

He notched up 67.5 miles in 11 hours 40 minutes and said he was: “elated and exhausted in equal measure.”
