Sporting achievements across the Isle will be recognised tomorrow at a very special celebration.

The Thanet Sports Awards reward clubs, talented performers, schools and volunteers, who will join Team GB beach volleyball stars Chris Gregory and Jake Sheaf as they take to the stage to present the awards.

Now in its seventh year, the gathering recognises the outstanding achievements that groups and individuals have made.

More than 300 guests are expected at the Margate Winter Gardens to celebrate the sporting achievements and efforts of those in the community.

All the nominees are residents of Thanet or represent Thanet-based clubs.

The award categories included: club and coach of the year, sportsman and sportswoman of the year: disabled sports person of the year; and unsung hero.

Prizes will also be handed out to the best primary and secondary sports schools of the year, and the best sports teacher.

Last year’s Sportsman of the Year award went to Ben Pond. The dedicated swimmer was away training in Hungary at the time of the ceremony and his award was collected by proud father Ian.

The Sportswoman of the Year award went to Katie Latham for the second year in succession, and Sue Miller took home the Coach of the Year accolade after attending the ceremony with her two sons and two best friends.

Another winner at last year’s event was St Peter’s Junior School, which won Primary Sports School of the Year.

The ceremony will also have a range of market stalls providing information on club and individual funding.

The annual awards evening is organised by Thanet District Council’s Sports Matters team, and supported by organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors.
