Team behind Broadstairs Fireworks put plan together to ensure future events go ahead

The organisers behind a series of summer fireworks displays are putting 'a plan of action' together for future events after a mass brawl broke out at the first one.

It is hoped the water gala and final fireworks display in Broadstairs will go ahead, despite organisers cancelling an upcoming event for the town.

They are now calling for volunteers and marshals to come forward to help run the events and provide extra security.

This comes after a huge police response was sparked on Wednesday (July 17) during the first of the four summer events planned by the Broadstairs Firework Events team.

Officers were called after a large group of youngsters were seen fighting near the harbour in the town, with witnesses comparing it to scenes of a 'war zone'.

Two girls were arrested after the disturbance on suspicion of affray.

As a result of the trouble, organisers announced last night that the next event, planned for next Wednesday (July 24), has been postponed while they seek guidance and support from police and Thanet District Council (TDC) "on how to move forward".

A statement on the group's Facebook said it was in "direct consequence of this anti-social behaviour that we have sadly taken the decision to postpone the forthcoming date".

It is not known if the event, which would have included performances from the Funkle Pie band and more fireworks, will be re-arranged.

But it is good news for residents and visitors, as the team behind the summer programme announced today that the Water Gala on July 31 will still go ahead.

This will include daytime activities such as the Fun Fair on Victoria Gardens.

Orgnisers say however, that in order for the night time entertainment on July 31, and on another date in August, to go ahead they will need more volunteers to help marshal the events.

They are now putting together a "plan of action" and are calling on people to come forward to offer their services in order to "rescue the rest of this year".

'So let us all not allow the idiotic, mindless, immature, minority ruin it for everyone!'

As well as extra bodies to "deter anti social behaviour", organisers need financial donations to "go towards the cost of security".

The team added that they have been "lifted by the hundreds of messages of encouragement" following the incident on Wednesday, and say they will not not "allow the idiotic, mindless, immature, minority ruin it for everyone".

The full statement reads: "Water Gala on July 31st is going ahead with the daytime activities including the Fun Fair on Victoria Gardens.

"However we have to put in a plan of action with the police and TDC to be confident that security will be adequate enough to deter anti social behaviour for the night time entertainment and fireworks both at Water Gala and August 21st.

"So...NEEDED - more volunteers to act as marshalls to assist with monitoring crowd activity and liaising with paid for security and the police for them to deal with any potential trouble spots.

"Bucket collectors to help collect money from the public to go towards the cost of security and general running of these events.

"Businesses in Broadstairs who value these events, please contribute with either a donation or practical help with marshalling.

"We have to act swiftly to 'rescue' the rest of this year and keep these wonderful evenings in Broadstairs.

"We have been 'lifted' by the hundreds of messages of encouragement and concerns over the incident - so let us all not allow the idiotic, mindless, immature, minority ruin it for everyone!"

The team also require six panels of Heras fencing and are asking anyone who can help with marshalling or donations to contact them.
