Keen young surfer and enterprising fundraiser Ralph Grieve is urging brave watersport enthusiasts to Board on Boxing Day to raise cash for Demelza House.

Ralph, 10, a pupil at St Peter’s Primary School, has organised a sponsored surf at Joss Bay at 3pm on December 26.

It is being hosted by Joss Bay Surf School and is certain to blow away the cobwebs after the Christmas excesses.

So far about 50 people have signed up to join in.

Santa hats and outfits are optional, with wetsuits a must.

McDonald’s has promised to provide 45 meals for surfers while Asda, Tesco and The Co-Operative will supply warming refreshments on the beach.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to McDonalds and the others for their support,” said Ralph’s mum Sancha.

She said Ralph had fulfilled an ambition and taken up surfing this year, taking to it “like a duck to water.” Indeed, she and dad David join him in the water and the family has been in the last few days, undeterred by the chilly temperatures.

Ralph previously raised £800 through a sponsored 27-mile cycle for Children In Need.

His parents are “incredibly proud” of him. The three of them hope to visit Demelza House after Christmas.

Download sponsor forms from www.demelza.org.uk or collect from Victory News at 4 Nelson Place or Joss Bay Surf Store at 48 High Street, call 01843 860860.
