Danny Green believes Margate will take some stopping once they get into their stride in Vanarama National League South.
The midfielder felt Gate only showed signs of their best in Saturday's 1-1 home opener with Truro City, and says there is much more to come, both from him and the squad.
Former Dover man Green, who signed for Gate from Maidenhead in June, said: “You can see we want to play football and maybe when the pitch gets a little wetter, the tempo will go up and I don’t think teams will (be able to) take that.
“It’s a dry pitch and it was always going to be baking hot on the first day – it all slows the tempo a little bit but when we get going I think teams won’t deal with us in the final third."
Saturday goalscorer Green was one of seven debutants against Truro, and he reckons Terry Brown's squad is more than capable of launching a promotion challenge.
He added: “With the squad we’ve got we should be competing at the top end. We should be competing for play-offs as a minimum and trying to win the league.
"If you’re not here to do that then you shouldn’t be playing football. We want to win the league and if we don’t, we go up through the play-offs.”
Gate are due at Whitehawk on Tuesday and travel to Havant and Waterlooville on Saturday and Green says it is important they hit the ground running on the road.
He added: "We'll go to both places to win - that's our mentality. It won't be as easy as that but that's what we're here for. You've got to get your away form right to do well in this division."
