New striker Ashley Nzala made an instant impact at Margate.
Having joined on dual-registration from National League South Dulwich, he bagged a debut weekend goal as they won 2-0 against Bognor Regis at Hartsdown Park, the match starting at 1pm due to unexpected damage to the floodlights at the ground.
“Ash has signed from Dulwich. He’s quick and scores goals - and that’s what we need,” said manager Andy Drury, set to be without fellow hitman Korrey Henry (groin) for around two weeks with a knock he sustained at Carshalton.
“We are lacking goals in the frontline apart from, from Ben Greenhalgh, and Ash was really good on Saturday.”
The Isthmian Premier victory ended a three-match winless run for Gate.
Drury reflected: “Bognor are always, positionally, quite a decent team. We had a tricky run of fixtures before that in Lewes, Hornchurch and Carshalton.
“But on Saturday, I wouldn’t say we ever looked in much danger really.”
Midfielder Ade Cole got Margate’s other goal against Bognor - both efforts coming in the first period - after discussing with Drury when he was going to get his first goal this season in the build-up to the league encounter.
Drury said: “I said to him Thursday night at training ‘When are you going to score for me?’
“But he has been superb lately and I’m really pleased for Ade that he scored his goal.”
Drury isn’t ruling out adding to his ranks but added: “The trouble is, when anyone becomes available, there’s another five or six clubs interested. It’s difficult.”
Midfielder Montrell Deslandes struck for Gate on Tuesday in the 76th minute in the Velocity Cup in their 1-0 victory at Isthmian South East Chichester. In the Fourth Round, they’ll host rivals Folkestone on Tuesday, November 22. Tickets for the game are priced at a discounted £6 for adults, £4 for concessions and £1 for those aged between 11 and 17.
Margate, 14th, visit Wingate this Saturday before hosting Sheppey on Tuesday in the Kent Senior Cup.
