A police officer from Borough Green who was injured in a hit and run is said to be recovering well in hospital.

PC John Fordham was carrying out a routine stop when he was struck by a gold Volkswagen Golf in London Road, Larkfield at around 6.45pm on Saturday.

The driver who left the scene sparked a major man hunt, but later handed himself into police at the Maidstone station on Sunday.

Mr Fordham is an officer based in Tonbridge and is part of a local policing team for Borough Green and Long Mill.

Following the incident he suffered fractured vertebrae and a fractured thigh.

He is reported to be in a serious but stable condition in Kings College Hospital in London where he has been regularly visited by concerned colleagues.

Chief Superintendent Steve Corbishley said: “PC Fordham has been visited by lots of colleagues, including myself and the Chief Constable.

“Although he remains in hospital he is in fine spirits, which is testament to his bravery and professionalism, and he is being supported by doctors and colleagues.

“As a force we are very grateful for the number of good wishes that we have received from both member of the public and from police forces across the country.”

Lewis Goldswain from Vicarage Road, Halling appeared before Medway magistrates via video link on Tuesday, July 29.

Speaking only to confirm his name, the 27-year-old heard he was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He has been remanded in custody until Friday, August 15 when he will appear at Maidstone Crown Court.
