Work to clear up a landslip cannot start because the scene is "too dangerous".

Network Rail has issued an update on the site two days after mud and earth slipped near Godstone, bringing trains between Tonbridge and Redhill to a halt.

Speaking on Sunday Fiona Taylor route director for Kent, said the line will be closed in both directions "for the foreseeable future".

Today Network Rail said: "As of this morning the ground at the site of the landslip is still moving and too dangerous to work on. Travel arrangements are being put together Southern Rail and once issued these arrangements will be in place until further notice.

"The location of the landslip is very remote, which means access is difficult. We need to build a road across the fields, cut a hole in an abandoned railway embankment, and then build a bridge over the River Eden.

"After a month’s worth of rain in one week the soil had become saturated and nearby the River Eden had burst its banks. Kent endured three months’ worth of rainfall in November alone. The land around the line could not soak up any more rain.
