Tonbridge: Team behind High Street redevelopment provide progress update

It's been almost eight weeks since major redevelopment of Tonbridge High Street began, and the team behind the project is pleased with progress so far.
Work commenced on August 17 as part of a £2.65m project being delivered by Kent County Council (KCC) in partnership with Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council.
The aim is to enhance the town's main shopping area. Activity started at the Vale Road end of the High Street where the zebra crossing has now been converted into a puffing crossing to help manage the flow of traffic during busy times.
Reconstruction work to the central island of the roundabout is nearing completion and contractors are progressing up the western side of the High Street towards the Big Bridge, improving kerbs and resurfacing footways.
They will return on the eastern side and are due to complete this work in April.
The High Street will also remain one-way northbound for the duration to ensure the safety of shoppers and contractors carrying out the work.
The one-way system will be removed between Sunday, November 22 and Sunday, January 3 inclusive to allow for the Christmas festival and to minimise the impact on shops in the run-up to the festive period.
Planners said they are also consulting locally in order to make provision for the town’s Remembrance Day service to go ahead unimpeded.
Matthew Balfour, KCC cabinet member for environment and transport said: “We are pleased that the work is fully underway and local people are able to see changes being made that will make the whole area more welcoming and pedestrian friendly, with less congestion and improved air quality.”
Teresa Seamer, shop owner and member of the Tonbridge Town Team, said: “We are excited that the regeneration of Tonbridge High Street is now up and running, however it is important to remember that the town centre is not closed for business.
“Our shop Gorgeous George welcomes customers old and new to come and discover our quirky gift and lifestyle shop with its specialist wine and spirit section located in The Pavilion.”
