A thug who repeatedly stamped on another man's head during a violent assault at a Tonbridge takeaway has been jailed.

George Forbes attacked his victim as he lay helpless on the floor, following an incident in the town last year.

Forbes, aged 46 and formerly of Medina Road, Cosham, Portsmouth had been inside the Kebab Express in Quarry Hill Road, during the early hours of August 20 last year, when he became involved in a clash with another customer.

He punched the man, causing him to fall to the floor, before he then kicked and stamped upon his head.

Forbes used the shop counter to steady himself in order to aim further blows at the prone victim, before a witness, who during the incident had walked into the takeaway, attempted to intervene.

Forbes continued attacking his victim and even after leaving the premises, returned two minutes later to collect a food order.

The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated for a number of facial and head injuries. He needed stitches and also lost a tooth.

Forbes was identified as being the offender from CCTV and after a media appeal was issued to locate his whereabouts, handed himself in to police.

Appearing at Maidstone Crown Court, he pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and was sentenced to two years and four months imprisonment.

PC Asa Buckland said: "It remains unclear as to why Forbes launched such a brutal attack against his victim, as he was lying utterly defenceless on the floor.

"There can never be any excuse for kicking or stamping on someone’s head and the injuries the victim suffered could certainly have been far worse.

"It is only right that Forbes has now received a custodial sentence and I hope this will act as a reminder to people that we will simply not tolerate such gratuitous violence on our streets. "
