A man accused of murdering his father in a double stabbing in Tonbridge has appeared at court this morning.

Patrick Murphy, of Hectorage Road, did not have a solicitor or barrister representing him as legal aid had not yet been granted.

The 29-year-old was charged with murder after an incident which left his father, 54-year-old Joe, dead and his 34-year-old brother, Mark, seriously injured.

During a preliminary hearing at Maidstone Crown Court, Murphy appeared via video link from HMP Elmley prison in Sheppey.

Wearing a grey tracksuit he spoke only to confirm his name and address and to indicate he understood what was taking place.

He is also charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of three knives in a public place.

During the attack, Murphy's 34-year-old brother, Mark, is believed to have suffered knife wounds to his throat, upper arm and hand.

He was flown to hospital in London in a serious condition.

The defendant did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody where he has been held since the incident.

He is due to appear in court for a plea and case management hearing on August 13.

A provisional trial date has been set for November 16.
