River Medway in Tonbridge searched after man stabbed to death

Emergency services are combing a river a week after a young man was stabbed to death.

Police were joined by the fire service and search and rescue teams to look in the water near Holford Street, Tonbridge.

It comes a week after Thomas Waugh, 20, died from his injuries after being attacked in nearby Avebury Avenue.

A huge police presence was seen in the town the following day and areas including Holford Street, Avebury Avenue and the nearby Riverside Walk park were cordoned off.

On Friday, multiple officers, including two men in a dinghy were seen searching the waters near a small footpath bridge in the town.

One witness said: "There's loads of emergency services here.

"Police are also in the nearby flats in Holdforth Street. Two people are in a small boat going up and down the river."

Last Friday police were called at 12.55am and attended along with ambulance crews.

Earlier this week a 17-year-old boy, from Coulsdon, and a 16-year-old boy, from Tonbridge, were charged with murder and appeared at Maidstone Crown Court today where they were remanded in custody.

The suspects were further charged with the attempted robbery of Mr Waugh, as well as an additional count of robbery in relation to two men who had been with him prior to the alleged murder.

A 16-year-old girl, who was also arrested on suspicion of murder, and a woman, aged 47, who was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, have been released on bail, pending further inquiries.

Initially a teenager was arrested on Friday morning, with five more, including four teenagers, being arrested on suspicion of murder the following day.

Previously, DI Lee Neiles, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate, said: "We thank those who have come forward with information so far and we are continuing to appeal for witnesses.

"It is crucial that we speak to anyone who may have heard or seen anything suspicious, just after midnight.

"The area where the victim was assaulted was close to Tonbridge Park and a large number of residential properties.

"If you think you may be able to assist the investigation please don’t hesitate to call us."
