Young people on Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s Y2 Crew summer scheme were joined by the Mayor, Cllr Sasha Luck as they took part in a ‘Grow, Cook and Eat’ session in Chiddingstone.
The Grow, Cook and Eat day aims to encourage young people to grow and cook healthy and sustainable food and gives them the opportunity to harvest seasonal organic produce and use it to make a healthy lunch to enjoy together.
During her visit on Wednesday, August 20 at Commonwork, the Mayor was given a tour of the allotments where the children shared their knowledge of what was growing.
They then harvested some vegetables and rhubarb and returned to the kitchen with the Mayor to prepare lunch.
The Mayor helped knead and shape bread dough that the young people had made earlier in the day and while it baked in the oven they made soup and crumble with the ingredients from the allotment.
Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Cllr Sasha Luck said: “Baking bread is so satisfying – but it took a lot of patience to wait for the bread to bake – the wonderful aroma coming from the oven meant it was hard to resist opening the door.
"But they kept me busy in the allotment and it was well worth the wait! Home baked bread with freshly made soup made for a delicious lunch. It was good to see so many young people learning how to make such an important food staple – and really having fun doing so!”
