Music-lovers have a fantastic concert featuring works by Faure and Bruch to look forward to.

But the distinctive thing about the performance in the Chapel of St Augustine in Tonbridge School will be the conductor - he is only 17 years old.

Year 12 student Alex Trigg will be directing the Tudeley Singers and The Orchestra of St Augustine in a performance of Fauré's Pavane and his Requiem in D Minor, as well as Bruch's First Violin Concerto.

Alex co-founded The Tudeley Singers last year, and founded The Orchestra of St Augustine specifically for this event.

He said: "I first got involved in choral music as a chorister in King's College Choir, famous for its Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols service on Christmas Eve.

"I hope to return to King's in a few years as an organ scholar, and to follow a career in choral conducting for the rest of my life."

The concert at 6pm on Sunday, March 10, will be in support of Child Action Lanka, which aims to transform the lives of disadvantaged children in Sri Lanka, and Alex hopes to raise £1,500.

It won't be the first time he has helped the charity, two years ago he did an organ recital which raised £650.

The headmaster of Tonbridge School, James Priory, said: “As a school, we have set ourselves the ambitious challenge of raising funds to build a new education centre in Batticaloa with our partners, Child Action Lanka. It is brilliant, therefore, to see the boys showing such creativity and resourcefulness in supporting this great cause.

"To put together a concert from scratch is no mean feat, let alone at just 17 years of age. Alex has worked tremendously hard and I wish him every success on the night.”
