Pupils at Platt Primary School pulled out all the stops for their annual sports day.

It was a landmark day for the school, situated in Maidstone Road, as it was the first time that a large-scale event had taken place on a newly built field - which will in the not too distant future, adjoin a new school building.

The children were organised into various houses, a practice first propagated in the 1960s, and wore coloured t-shirts associated with each of these groups.

Although overcast, the weather held out for the event on Tuesday, July 14, and proceedings began just after lunch.

Scott Wishart, whose three children attend Platt Primary School, attended the day. He said: "In the five years I've been attending the school sports day I cannot remember ever seeing so many parents, grandparents, guardians and other family members and friends in attendance."

The first half of the afternoon involved an array of sporting activities including football, skipping and hockey. After a rest the children took to the running track and competed in various year groups.

Mr Wishart added: "The look of determination on the faces of some children was palpable, possible future olympians perhaps.

"However, all crossed the line with smiles on their faces, and cheered each other on through the heats and subsequent finals. As with previous years, the bonhomie between the children across age groups was a joy to see, and as parents I know we feel quite blessed to be part of this very special little community."

Headteacher, Mrs Hannah Walters, said: "It was fantastic we got to use our new school field so it was wonderful. All the families, parents, grandparents and siblings said how nice it was to finally hold a whole school event on the field.

"It was a perfect day. Our school is like a little family, the older kids know the younger children and they really look after them. The parents are wonderful too, they helped set up early in the morning and helped tidied up after the day.

"The kids were all cheering each other on and taking part. We really are a little family and I think that's what makes Platt so special."
