A goalkeeper "wouldn't stop saying sorry" after his blunder sealed his side's first loss of the season.

Tonbridge Angels shot-stopper James Shaw rolled the ball out to the edge of the penalty, thinking he had been fouled by Hungerford Town FC forward James Harding.

However, the referee didn't blow his whistle for the free-kick.

Shaw protested to the official as the striker pounced on the loose ball and walked it into the open net.

An Angels TV commentator said as the goal went in: "What's happening here?

"I thought the referee had given the free-kick, so did James Shaw, and Hungerford have scored a second goal.

"I thought I'd heard a whistle - but no. I can't believe what I'm seeing here. What a bizarre goal."

An Angels player could be seen protesting the decision to the referee, while the Berkshire players ran towards the corner of Longmead Stadium in Tonbridge to celebrate the goal.

The 94th-minute strike secured Hungerford's 2-0 win on Saturday and saw the Kent club slip to 10th in National League South, the fifth tier of English football.

Speaking after game at the Longmead Stadium, Angels defender Jack Parter said: "James said it was foul - the player kicked his foot - but I think the ref called play on because he had the ball in his hands.

"He rolled it out thinking it was a free-kick and they scored.

"James wouldn't stop saying sorry."
