A young man is to appear in court today over a stabbing in Tonbridge.

The 20-year-old, who police are refusing to name, is charged with wounding the man of 55 with intent.

He is due to appear in custody at Sevenoaks Magistrates' Court over the stabbing on Tuesday night.

Emergency services were called to a property in the High Street, near the Bordyke Road junction, at about 6pm and found the victim badly injured.

He was taken to The Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury with serious injuries believed to have been caused by a knife.

The younger man was arrested at Tonbridge railway station nearby.

Forensic teams were on the scene until 10.30pm.

Police earlier said it was an "isolated incident" and the suspect and victim are both known to each other.

Officers were examining several items recovered from the scene and the suspect - but a spokesman could not confirm if any of these included a knife.

One business owner said she saw two police cars and an ambulance near the Ivy House restaurant.

Barista Jade Derrick was working in the Flying Bean Coffee shop at the station where she witnessed the suspect being arrested.

She said the officers appeared to have a battering ram with them, adding: "I noticed a police car and an unmarked car outside and when the officers returned they had a man with him."

Taxi driver Ken Davis was parked outside the station, in Waterloo Road, at the time.

He said: "I was in my cab and saw a police car go past, but you expect that in rush hour. I didn't see a thing. You don't get a lot of violent crime in Tonbridge so I was surprised when I heard what had happened."
