A 17th century letter sealer and a hoard of Roman coins found in Kent have been classified as treasure.
A group of Roman silver denari, which could be dated back to one of emperor Caesar’s generals, Mark Anthony, were found in Sherwood, Tunbridge Wells.
A silver copper alloy pedestal pendant Seal Matrix was also found in Edenbridge and has been identified as being more than 300 years old.
All the finds have been classified as treasure in terms of age and precious metal content.
The treasure inquests were held at Gravesend’s Old Town Hall by North West Kent coroner Roger Hatch.
He told the hearing the British Museum in London had expressed interest in acquiring the items.
The sealer was described as weighing just under 5g and measured 15.8mm long by 14.5mm wide and 24.9mm high.
“This type of Seal Matrix would have acted as a personal sealer for the closing of letters and correspondence,” said Mr Hatch. “Although it has a copper alloy it has been heavily silvered.”
No further details as to when they were found or by whom were given.
